Awesome friends, I am so happy you’re back! Today’s makeover is this super sweet night table I picked up at the thrift store for more than I wanted to spend:
It was $34 with 20% off, so I ended up paying $27. That’s really not bad at all. I’m just cheap.
The original top on this one was a hot mess:
I’ve included a few affiliate links so you can find the products I love.
The prep
So I sanded it down with my rotary sander using 120 grit first, then 220 grit sandpaper:
Paint
Then after a good clean up, I got right to painting!
I decided to pull out a gorgeous color from Dixie Belle’s Moonshine Metallics line for this one, Steel Magnolia!
Did you know that Dixie Belle makes eight beautiful metallic colors?
The first coat went on a bit sheer and looked terrible, but as you can see below, magic starts to happen with the second coat:
I used a total of three coats for solid coverage.
TIP: It is recommended to use a similar regular color like Driftwood as a base coat under the metallics for quicker, more solid coverage.
There is no need to seal the metallics as they are self-sealing, so that was it!
The After
I love love love this color! It is just so dreamy in person!
I was amazed at the beautiful finish on it once I was done!
I first painted the drawer hardware in white for some contrast:
But I didn’t love it at all. I felt it took away from the beautiful finish, so I painted them in the Steel Magnolia also.
So much better! And as you can see, I also lined the drawers.
I did BOSS these first, only because I used fabric with a white background and I wanted the white to stay a nice, bright white:
You could use just plain white paint also.
I used Frogtape to tape off the sides so it would stay nice and pretty in there. This is leftover fabric from our dining room chairs I shared HERE. I found it at Hobby Lobby.
You can see how I line drawers with fabric in the video below:
If you have trouble viewing, find it on YouTube HERE.
Those two mirrored wall hangings came from HomeGoods a couple of years back, and those pretty blooms came from JoAnns. I redid the chair HERE if you missed it!
I am so in love with this color!
All of the Moonshine Metallic colors are available in my shop. As always, shipping is free on orders over $50 and you get $8 flat rate shipping on all orders under $50.
Another one done! I’m plowing right through this haul woohoo!!
If there’s anything you missed here, you can catch up below:

$25 Thrift Store China Cabinet Makeover
$3 Lamp Makeover (& How to Rewire a Lamp)

Here’s another night table that I redid using a metallic finish, however things went south and I had to find a plan B!
Check out this flopped night table HERE!
I’ll meet y’all back here on Tuesday with this set of two night tables I scored for $10 each out of the back of the thrift store!
I’ll also have a brand new video showing how I chalk paint furniture!

Christy says
Thank you, Petra! I love the look of metallic paint too! Dixie Belle has started shipping internationally now, so I hope a retailer in Australia picks it up! XOXO

Oh how beautiful! I typically do not like metallic finishes on furniture, but this piece turned out beautiful. Love how the fabric matches the outside finish. It is amazing that the details pop really well with this color. Nice job!
Christy says
Thank you, Mary! I almost wish I had done our bedroom suite in this, but then it may have been too much. It is very pretty though, and I love how well my dining chair fabric worked with this color! XOXO
Nancy @ Artsy Chicks Rule says
I love the metallic! Soooo pretty… it’s been a while since I’ve used any metallic paints…. might have to change that! Love it! 🙂 xo

That solver is really a dreamy colour! I love it. And the drawer pulls in the same colour are perfect. What a classy transformation!!!
Several years ago I turned a buffet into my bathroom vanity. I painted the base Annie Sloan’s Aubusson Blue – a lovely old teal – and I painted the entire top with Martha Stewart’s Brushed Pewter, a lovely metallic colour. It is SO waterproof! If water gets left on it, it leaves a mark that totally wipes off. Great for a bathroom. There’s nothing like a classy metallic shimmer to add a little pizzazz!!!
Christy says
Thank you, Janina! Your vanity sounds gorgeous! I love Martha Stewart’s metallic line, but they stopped making it. It went on like a dream! XOXO
Andi says
Thing one: I LOVE that color!
Thing two: you have my Bulova glasses. I’d like them back, please. 😉
Thing three: I think you also have my old green music books lol

Hi Andi! I’ve missed you, my friend! Ha ha I have all the things and you must show up in person if you want them back! 😀 XOXO
Gail says
I always try to guess what you plan to do with a piece before scrolling through. I was guessing a gray (and stripes somewhere!) for this one so wasn’t off too much! I am not a fan of metallic furniture but this does look nice. We are about to move close to our friends who run several 2nd hand furniture stores from storage unit auctions. What a “candyland” to peruse their stores for great diy finds! ‘Can’t wait to try some of your techniques on the treasures we find there!
Christy says
Oh funny! Nope, you weren’t too far off at all lol! Thanks, Gail! How awesome to have someone on the inside that can hook you up with great pieces!! XOXO
Christina in SW FL says
Christy, I can see why you are so over the moon about this color on this piece. It totally transformed an outdated piece into a really amazing one. Love the fabric in the drawers, it really makes a huge impact.
Enjoy the rest of your week and weekend!
Christy says
Thank you, Christina! I really did transform this piece! Enjoy your weekend also! XOXO
Toni M DeBenedictis says

Good morning Christy! What a beautiful piece in this metallic paint! I guess I can’t say you always have a great eye, since you ended up having to redo that other piece that was a ‘flop,’ but this one is so pretty! And thanks for the links to the other colors – I love the Caribbean and Pacific blues especially!
I’ve been having my own Thrift Store Shakedowns recently, but sadly all by lonesome and not so many shops to visit in our little town. But I have quite a stash going! I’m looking forward to Spring when I can start on the furniture. Right now I’m satisfying myself with making pillows using vintage fabrics I’ve had squirreled away! You are my inspiration!
Christy says
Thank you so much, Gwen! Aren’t those blues SO dreamy?? I love the pink too! I do most of my thrifting solo and the one good thing about that is there is no fighting over who gets the good stuff ha ha! I think the collecting is the most fun. Have a great weekend! XOXO

I love how you turn a “sow’s ear into a silk purse”….(old saying.) I think it is time for another video of “thrift shopping” with your friend! I love those and I feel “right there with you” as you casually look for items, and have fun while you do it.
Christy says
Thank you, Sherry! My Mom uses that expression ha ha! Nancy and I have a thrifting date next week, so hopefully we’ll have a video for you soon! XOXO

Christy this post has made me rethink metallics! It’s so gorgeous! When I first started reading this post my mind said “no” but then my eyes taught me to keep an open mind. I love it! I always learn so much for your techniques, style, resources, choices, etc. I have redone a number of pieces but don’t think I ever would have had the courage without your honesty, openness, and willingness to share. Thank you!
Christy says
Thank you, Cassandra!! I think it changed my mind too and I was almost wishing I had used this on our bedroom furniture! I appreciate your sweet words so much! XOXO

sharon austin says
Ooooh, that turned out yummy!! I’m seeing a lot more furniture being done in metallics, which is something I wouldn’t normally buy for myself but so far, I’m loving the ones I’ve seen!
Christy says
Thank you, Sharon! I don’t think I would have gone for a metallic look in my own home, but after doing this piece, I’m eye-balling a table in my office!! XOXO

I just had to share this link with you. When I saw this nightstand in my email I couldn’t help but think of the one you just finished. I do have to admit I like yours better! I just wanted you to see the price. I just love the piece you featured and I know you probably won’t be selling it for as much as the one at Horchow, but please don’t sell yourself short!

Marcie Lovett says
Not terribly attractive before, but now it’s tres magnifique! That metallic paint is miraculous. Even better that it doesn’t need a top coat.
Funny, I thought the two tables were crossed out in the haul photo and I wondered how I missed them before I scrolled down. They would be fabulous in metallic, too, but I know you’re not going to repeat yourself. Can’t wait to see how they look.
Christy says
Thank you, my friend! That paint really is a miracle worker! As for the two tables…I really wish I would have done that set in the metallic! XOXO
Jerri says

I never thought I would like the metallic finishes but I sure like that one! And no topcoat or distressing! Worth the extra money! Can’t wait to try this!
Christy says
Yes!! It’s awesome! I loved this color when it came out, but I never imagined it would look this beautiful on a piece of furniture! I almost wish I’d painted our bedroom furniture in this color! XOXO
Nancy says
Oh, my gosh! I’m not a huge fan of metallic paint but this … this is just stunning! And I can’t believe how perfectly it goes with the white chair. This one gets an A++! I am about to start painting all of my 90s dark brown-stained furniture with white chalk paint and you’ve inspired me to choose at least one piece to wear Steel Magnolia. Can’t wait to get started! 🙂
Christy says
Oh yay! I’m so glad you like it, Nancy! Thank you! I never imagined this in our home either, but I’m thinking of using it on a table in my office now!! I hope you try it too! XOXO
ROSE LEFEBVRE says

Thank you so much, Rose! XOXO
Cyndi J says
You inspired me when you did the antique silver nightstand a few years ago. In fact, a search for antique silver paint finish led me to your blog the first time. Ever since then I’ve been following along. For that nightstand, I used Martha Stewart’s metallic line and glazed it. I found a matching nightstand and now it needs to be painted to match the first. But I knew I would need to find a new silver metallic because I don’t think I have enough to paint the second nightstand. I’m not going to glaze it this time. So I’ll have to paint both nightstands. Gold rub-n-buff looks fantastic on the hardware against the silver. Anyway, I just placed an order from your shop. Lots of people had lots of products in their carts!
Christy says
Oh yay!! I loved Martha Stewart’s metallics line! I used to be able to find it at Home Depot, but when I went back for more a few years ago, they said they had been discontinued. Yours sounds fabulous! I really love this finish and it would be gorgeous in a bedroom!! And yes, business is good…I love to see people going for it!! Thanks for following along with me, Cyndi!! XOXO
Rosie says
Simply beautiful!!
I really like how you lined the drawers too.
Christy says
Thank you so much, Rosie! XOXO

I love everything you did here. The rich looking color. The color you selected makes for a rich/elegant look. I definitely plan to do this to one of my nightstand tables. You nailed this project! Thanks for sharing.

Jackie C says

Christy says
Thank you, Jackie! This will gorgeous on a jewelry armoire for sure!! XOXO
Karen Parker says
Christy – love your blog and your style. This night table is so beautiful in this color. I liked this so well I have purchased some from your Etsy store (thank you very much!). Anyway, my question is, could you recommend a nice coordinating Dixie Bell product for other bedroom pieces? I have read in your comment responses that you almost wish you’d used this steel magnolia on your own bedroom furniture, I have a similar set, albeit a more plain Jane version lol.! Would you have done all your pieces in this or used a coordinating color as well? Would love to hear your opinion ❤️ Thanks and apologies for being such a long comment!
Christy says
Thank you so much, Karen! I absolutely love this color!! I really would have liked to see our bedroom set painted in it, but I don’t know if I would tire of it over time. It was such a big job that I’m glad that I went with a more simple white. This is perfect for a few accent pieces though! It would also be lovely if I had painted just the inside panels of the drawers in this color! I can really picture that! XOXO
Karen Parker says
Thank you for your reply. I loved the way your bedroom furniture turned out with the white. I’m not sure yet just exactly how I’ll incorporate the Steel Magnolia, but I like the idea of the inside drawer panels as well! Thanks for all the inspiration ❤️
Christy says
You are so welcome! Have fun with yours!! XOXO
