Hello, amazing friends! I’ve got a round of smalls for y’all today! If you’re new around here, welcome!! I like to gather several smaller pieces that alone wouldn’t be very exciting makeovers, however, when grouped together, they make for fun post! I always love to see how the simplest of changes can make such a difference!
And if you missed it on Tuesday, I shared Redesign’s brand new Bloom in Serenity collection. Today, I’m featuring a few of those items in my makeovers, but I’ll link to the whole collection below.
Here’s how this bunch started:

Clean
Before we dive in, all of these items were cleaned first using White Lightning, mixing one TBSP into a half gallon of warm water:

These terrycloth applicator sponges are perfect for this purpose.
Mini Makeover #1
Up first is this simple frame that I picked up for $1.99 at the thrift store:

I kind of liked the worn look of it, but it was really yellowed in places and just dirty looking when you get in close, so I took sandpaper to it:

You can see how the right side there that hadn’t been sanded was pretty dirty looking. Sanding it made it better, but still yellowed looking.
And on closer inspection, not only was it very yellowed, it was split right in the center of the inside:

You know I only bought this because I’m cheap and it was cheap.
At this point I was wondering why did I buy this??
But, I managed to glue that split back together, and then I decided to go ahead and paint the frame in Tea Rose from Dixie Belle:

I only did one coat though and sanded all over to keep the worn feel that it had. Then I gave it a quick seal using Rustoleum Clear Satin spray:

The new frame color was perfect for this new Dusty Mauve Shimmer Double Delight Decoupage Paper:

Right??
I needed a hard surface to mount it to and found a thin piece of luan that I cut to fit using my Ryobi Jigsaw:

Then, I painted it in Fluff to give my paper a nice, white background so the colors would look their best.
Once that was dry, I applied a coat of Redesign’s Decoupage Gel:

I then applied my paper and used a piece of saran wrap to smooth it out…

To seal, I added a coat of Clear Coat in Satin over the top using a brush:

You can use the gel also, bit since I planned to seal it with the Clear Coat anyway, I went straight to that.
Then, I added my new art to the frame and painted the back…

Can you see how I secured it to the frame there? I improvised using some sawtooth hangers on the corners lol.
Mini Makeover #1 After
Here’s how this one turned out!

Such a sweet piece now…

I sanded to keep it a bit worn looking and to let some of the green peek through, although it’s difficult to see that here…

And I added this small detail using the Josephine Decor Mould:

I’m so glad I was able to do something with this frame!

Mini Makeover #2
Next up is this dated art I found for $3.98:

I removed everything from the frame first:

After giving the frame a good cleaning, I painted it in two coats of Gardenia:

While that was drying, I moved on to the mats, painting them in Savannah Mist:

You sure can absolutely paint the mats! Just use a super light hand so you don’t leave brush marks since you won’t be sanding after.
Then, I pulled out this super cute coastal transfer from the new release called Whispers by the Marsh:

I chose a cute piece as the centerpiece of my new art…

I sealed the frame the same as the first and put it all back together.
I always try to finish my pieces off nicely on the back, adding hanging hardware as well:

Mini Makeover #2 After
And here is how it turned out!

I wish I hadn’t added the glass back before photographing as it is really hard to see it well with the reflection, but hopefully, you get the idea.

Here’s a better look at this sweet image:

A mama and baby maybe?

Definitely better than what was there before!

Mini Makeover #3
Mini Makeover number three is a mini me of the first makeover! I’ve had this oval frame since our last house!! I brought it with us when we moved here in 2017:

It’s on the small side so too small for a tray, and so it has just sat staring at me.
This decoupage paper set comes with the larger image I used with the first frame, and also this smaller version:

I decided it was perfect for this frame! And maybe someone can buy them as a set?
I painted this one in Tea Rose also…

And basically followed all the same steps as the first one, except I sealed this one using Clear Coat in satin using the blue sponge applicator.
Mini Makeover #3 After
Here is how it looks now:

It makes a for a pretty set!
It could hang on its own too on a smaller wall or as part of a vignette.

Very romantic!

I just LOVE this decoupage paper!!

Mini Makeover #4
This next item was 25% off of $6.99:

I wasn’t sure I could change this up much when I found it, but it’s wood and it’s functional.
Paint
I start by painting it in Savannah Mist:

Better already! I added some Gardenia int there as well and then sanded the Gardenia parts…

Then I pulled out the Whispers by the Marsh transfer once again and chose a couple of pieces to put together for this one…

I wasn’t sure how the transfer would adhere to this rough surface, but it did great!
The image felt a bit stark on this rough surface, so I sanded it lightly to weather it a bit…

I also painted the original hooks and then sealed everything with the Rustoleum spray sealer…

And this mini makeover was complete!
Mini Makeover #4 After
Here is how it turned out:

The Gardenia appears a bit dark next to the bright white towels, but it doesn’t feel as dark in person…

We don’t get coastal designs too often, and I just love this one!

Mini Makeover #5
Mini Makeover #5 is this silver plated tray I found while thrifting ages ago for $5.99:

It had cute little feet which I am always drawn to!
This one started with a coat of Bonding BOSS first.

Bonding BOSS is both a stain blocking primer and an adhesion primer in one convenient product. I let that dry for 24 hours to let it work its magic.
Paint
I decided to stick with my 90’s mauve and blue theme I had going on lol and painted this one in Tea Rose as well, giving it two coats. Once it was good and dry, I sanded all over to smooth with a fine grit sanding sponge:

There is another new transfer I wanted to use that I thought would be perfect against this dusty pink. This is the Blush Reverie Middy transfer:

Once I added my tranfser, I sealed it using Clear Coat in satin, two coats, using the blue sponge applicator to apply it.
Mini Makeover #5 After
Here is how this one turned out…

A little closer…

How cute are those feet? I need to go back and gild them a bit to match the top.

I just love the details on these silver plated peices!

And this transfer is so pretty with this color!

It would be lovely against a soft yellow too.

Mini Makeover #6
And last but not least is an oldie I pulled from the archives to round out this set of six:

It was on clearance for super cheap, so I grabbed it right on up! I didn’t always take y’all through every step back in the day, so there are no in progress shots of this one. We’re jumping right to the after!
Mini Makeover #6 After
Here ya go!

The color very closely resembles Savannah Mist and it’s coastal, so it goes perfectly with the other two coastal makeovers in this bunch!
I dry brushed it with with white to give it a more weathered feel…

And to get the crab on there, I used my Silhouette. Before we had all these fun things to play with, stencils were pretty much it!

I used to love to put crabs on stuff. I’ve added them to other projects HERE, HERE, and HERE. Adding my city (VB=Virginia Beach) made these pieces good sellers, and the crab just fits.

It was too small to be very useful as a tray, but it worked out great as wall art!

And that’s SIX more mini makeovers!!

I’m always amazed at what simple changes can do!

Here is everything included in the new collection!

I used that fence picket as well!

You have your super creative cape on when you upcycled that rustic wooden wall hanger! Transformation doesn’t begin to describe how changed it is! If there is an ugly duckling to swan contest, submit it as your guaranteed to win entry!
Christy says
Aww you are so sweet, thank you!! I wasn’t sure what could be done with that one when I found it, but function usually sells, so I gave it a go! Paint did wonders lol! XOXO
Jackie C says
oh wow, I love them all. I wish I could find a pretty silver tray. I haven’t run across any good ones. You always find such pretty ones. So I have a question on that very first transfer. It’s beautiful and I’ve already added it to my favorites in your shop. But the word “shimmer” has me worried… lol please tell me there’s no shimmer/glitter/sparkles on it. It doesn’t appear that there is from your makeover, but I wanna make sure before I buy it. I’m really drawn to the floral transfers. So beautiful.
Christy says
Thank you, Jackie! I always love the silver plated pieces when they have feet! No, there is absolutely no shimmer on that paper at all. 😀 XOXO
Marion says
