Hello hello dear friends, and welcome back!! Before we get to today’s makeover, I wanted to say thank you SO much for all the love sent my way regarding our kitchen makeover and the exciting news I shared on Thursday! Ya’ll are the BEST!!
Today, I’ve got a chair that I scored for only $5 dollars at the thrift store not long after we were able to thrift again.
It’s this little cutie with a cane seat:
It was priced at $6.25, but I had a 20% off coupon from a full punch card that I redeemed that day, making it closer to $5! They had two of them, and for the life of me, I don’t know why I didn’t grab them both!
I’ve included a few affiliate links so you can find the products I love.
Painting the Chair
When painting chairs, I almost always start with a coat of Rustoleum spray primer just to get a quick coat of paint on them. Priming is not necessary before chalk painting, however, you will want to prime at least the cane part.
I used my medium spray shelter to spray this one in, which is the perfect size for chairs:
I did have the garage door open while spraying. It gets so windy at our house, that I sometimes have to use it partway in the garage so it doesn’t get picked up by the wind!
Once that was dry, I gave it two coats of Dixie Belle’s Cotton which gave me solid coverage:
How much better is the cane seat painted white? I just love caning after it’s been painted white!
Sanding the Chair
Next, I sanded all over using 220 grit sandpaper wrapped around an old foam sanding sponge:
This not only makes my painted surface buttery smooth, but it also allows me to distress it here and there, my favorite look!
I used my shop vac with the brush attachment to clean up the dust from sanding.
Adding transfers
Then I decided to add a couple of embellishments with mini transfers:
These are from a set of mini transfers called Classic Vintage Labels by Re-designed by Prima, and you can find them in my shop HERE.
Sealing the Chair
Finally, I sealed the chair using Clear Coat in Satin and the blue sponge applicator:
You can see more on how I apply sealer using the blue sponge in this video:
If you have trouble viewing, find it on YouTube HERE.
The After
And here is how this pretty little chair turned out:
The mini transfer adds such a sweet detail…
I mentioned that I added a couple of transfers because I also added one to the front…
I love the simple black and white roses…
In that photo above, you can also see that I sanded the spindles to show some “wear”. I had someone reach out to ask if I sanded spindles that were straight like this. Normally, I sand anywhere a piece might normally see wear, and that would include across the spindles at the back.
I love how white paint looks when distressed, especially on the spindly legs…
I don’t usually go too crazy with the distressing though.
I love the texture caning adds when painted white!
I hope y’all enjoyed this sweet makeover today!

Wow it is so cute now, I love the white, but the star of the show are the transfers. They bring that chair up to the top of beautiful range! I haven’t tried transfers yet, I am waiting for Dixie Bell to come out with theirs. The sneak peak you showed us are beautiful. Be sure to let me know when those are in your Etsy shop.
Christy says
Thank you, Mary! Transfers are magical!! I will be able to place my order for the new transfers tomorrow morning woohoo! I’m hoping to have them delivered and listed by next week, but I’ll definitely keep ya’ll posted! XOXO
Petra says
I could do with a few chairs like that! Hard to find in my neck of the woods. I seem to have a thing for chairs – they always look amazing painted up in most colours – especially softer hues. Another great job! Looking forward to seeing your next chair 🙂
Christy says
Thank you, Petra! Apparently, I have a thing for chairs too lol! I wish I would have grabbed the mate to this one. Chairs are great in most shades! Have a great day, my friend! XOXO
Maryellen Webber says
I love this cane chair! I have one in my garage that my great grandmother caned herself. Thanks for inspiring me to give it a makeover! I have to get over my fear of painting furniture! 😉
Christy says
Thank you, Maryellen! Yes, you can totally do it! Your grandmother would be happy to see it in use again, I’m sure! XOXO
Rosie says
Simply lovely! Distressed look is my favourite too😊
Christy says
Thank you, Rosie! Yes, distressed is the best! XOXO
Christina says
So simple and sweet Christy, I love it! The transfers are just right. 🙂
You are zooming through this haul!!
Have a great week!
Christy says
Thank you, Christina! It sure feels like I’ve been on this haul for forever lol…almost there though woohoo! XOXO
Marcie Lovett says
Not to pile on but, really, Christy? You only bought one? 😉 With that pretty detail on the back and the turned legs, it was a great find! The paint and decal really freshen it up. Oh, well, there will be other chairs out there for you to rescue and I look forward to seeing what you do with them.
Christy says
I know!!! What was I thinking?? Honestly, I think I knew I had six chairs already in need of a redo ha ha, but I sure am kicking myself now! Thank you, Marcie!! XOXO
Cheryl says

Mandy Smith says
All I can say is why on earth didn’t you buy both those chairs?
Christy says
I know!! I could cry! I think I was at my limit that day…had a totally full cart and found those as I was heading to the register! XOXO
Hilary says
Christy, love the chair makeover and have a question for you. When painting the caned section do you paint the underside also? Sorry if you have already addressed this before.
Christy says
Thank you, Hillary! I start with a quick spray of primer when doing chairs and I start with them facing down, so I will give the underside a quick spray, but I do not paint it. XOXO
Janice Holt says
What a sweet chair. Looked at it early this morning but didn’t have time to comment. Me and my husband has to get our 1st vaccine this morning. Wasn’t bad at all and everybody was so nice. Nurses sure have it hard during these times. Didn’t you say you were a nurse before?
Christy says
Thank you, Janice! How awesome you were able to get your first vaccine today! Yes, I was a nurse in my previous life…kudos to those that have had to deal with COVID!! XOXO
Michele M. says
That is sooooooo cute now, Christy! Cannot believe the difference. WOW!
Christy says
Thank you, Michele! XOXO
Glenda says
Hey Christy, As usual you have made a pretty chair look “Beautiful”. You make everything look so easy and you do inspire us to pickup a paint brush and paint.
I do have one question for you, the chalkboard, I have looked through your posts and cannot find where you did this project. I love it and it looks so soft but yet, it could go anywhere. If you could guide me in the right direction, I would so appreciate you.
Looking forward to seeing what you come up with next.
Christy says
Thank you so much, Glenda! I did make the chalkboard. I had two mirrors that were falling out of those frames that I purchased at a church sale many years ago. I finally redid them at the beginning of this year, one still as a mirror that is in my booth and this one, but I never shared them on the blog. I liked the size of this so I decided to keep it for staging and had forgotten all about it until I was moving some things in the closet in my storage room and uncovered it. Unfortunately, I don’t have a post on it! Sorry!XOXO
Rose Lefebvre says
It really came out nice! I love t. I bought a chair just like it a few years ago that had been painted white.
Christy says
Thank you, Rose! It is a great chair! XOXO
Cecilia from Georgia says
Your magic wand is your paint brush! Sweet transfers add a delightful touch. How’s your booth doing? Looking forward to an update!
Christy says
Aww thank you, Cecilia! I love that analogy! The booth is hanging in there…it’s about time for a booth update! XOXO
Lizzy says
That’s right up my alley. I love everything about it! Pinned!
Christy says
Thanks so much, Lizzy! We have very similar taste…I love this look too! XOXO
