Hello amazing friends! Do you love painted baskets as much as I do?? I’m still working my way through my Free-to-me Haul, and in it I had two baskets, but today, I’m actually sharing four basket makeovers in all!
Along with the two in this haul, I also pulled two more baskets I had hanging around the garage:
Let’s jump right in!
Basket Makeover #1
Up first is this shallow basket I picked up recently at the thrift store for $3.25:
There isn’t a whole lot you can do with a simple basket like this to jazz it up, but sometimes a pretty color is all it needs!
This is one of my favorite custom Dixie Belle paint mixes that I use quite often. It’s a mix of 40% The Gulf, 40% Vintage Duck Egg Blue, and 20% Cotton:
I just mixed a good sized batch in an almost empty paint jar so I have it on hand when I want to use it.
My Favorite Basket Painting Brush
My favorite brush for painting baskets is the Best Dang Brush. The large flat round head on it gets in all those grooves and it makes painting baskets super quick!
I don’t let these natural hair brushes sit for days in saran wrap like I do my regular paint brushes as they do tend to stiffen, but they are easy to rinse out with water and a small wire brush.
This beachy blue is perfect for displaying some favorite beach finds!
I chose not to seal any of the baskets I’m sharing today.
Basket Makeover #2
Up next is this light colored basket I found at a yard sale late in the day. They were giving away everything that was left, so I helped myself to this gem:
I’m not sure about those whatever-they-are-on-the-front, but this basket actually had a cute shape to it!
I chose to stain it gray using Voodoo Gel Stain in Up in Smoke:
Voodoo Gel Stain is water-based, so clean up is super easy! I also used my Best Dang Brush here to apply the stain.
Once I had the basket stained, I decided to add stripes to the handle!
It turned out cute, but I thought it needed a little something else…
So, I grabbed a wooden tag (from a stack that I had cut a while back from the old backing off of a mirror), painted it, and then found some transfer scraps to embellish it:
I also painted a metal key that I had found on clearance after Halloween a couple years back and attached them to the handle of this basket for some added whimsy!
See how I added some super cute tags to a few other baskets HERE!
Basket Makeover #3
The third makeover of this group started out like this:
I’ve used it in our pantry for years to hold potatoes, but once we redid our pantry, I upgraded our potato storage.
I gave this one a good coat of Cotton white paint using my Best Dang Brush once again:
Then I took a rag and wiped back some of the paint…
Some areas had started drying already, so I added more paint to “reactivate” the paint below and wiped right away.
I love this look!
And it is so easy to do!
And quick too!
Basket Makeover #4
This last basket is one I bought many years ago and used with my Christmas decorations. It was the perfect size to hold a small table-top Christmas tree:
This one got the same treatment as the basket above!
I painted it in Cotton and then wiped back the paint with a rag.
I left the handles solid white though and just sanded them a bit to distress.
And I added a little something extra to this one just like I did the first.
I had a small amount of gingham transfer left from an old project, and the white piece I added on top started out as the backplate that went with a knob I removed from a dresser ages ago…
They give this little basket some personality!
That’s four more baskets done!

Update: See how this beauty turned out HERE now! It’s quite a difference!
Have a lovely weekend, beautiful friends!
XOXO,
Don’t Miss a Thing!
If you like what you see, there are several ways to follow along!
Mary Kaiser says
Oh, they all are so beautiful now, and I love easy makeovers like these. You have saved so many baskets over the years from the land fill, GREAT JOB CHRISTY!!
Christy says
Thank you, Mary! I know, right? I really should go back and count them all! Have a great day! XOXO
Mariann Davids says
I love your tutorial on the basket makeovers. I had seen one before and actually did a few basket makeovers. I was wondering if you sell these baskets and if so could you share how well sales go and how you decide what to charge. I put my basket makeovers in a local shop as well as a booth I have but to date have not sold a one. Very disappointed about this because I like doing the makeovers. Thanks!
Christy says
Thank you, Mariann! The baskets I’ve redone have all ranged in size, so I’ve priced them anywhere between $18 and $36 or so. The added embellishments really help them to sell, and those sell the quickest. I too have had some that have hung around for a bit, but they do eventually sell. Good luck! XOXO
Petra says
Very pretty 🙂 and looking forward to seeing what you do with that tallboy. Have a great weekend! xo
Christy says
Thank you, Petra! I’m looking forward to seeing what I do with it also ha ha…I’ve been staring at it long enough lol! XOXO
Denise Cox says
Of course, I like the first one cos of the coastal color! But, surprisingly enough, the gray one is my favorite!! I’m not a fan of stripes, but I think the “doo-dads” you added are adorable and really sell it for me!!!! I like bright colors and have grown to love white, but that gray is “neat-o” (oops, dating myself there… Lol). Great job and love your custom color!! ❤️ I do have a question. With baskets that require more than a dusting, do you scrub them with a brush /cloth!
Christy says
Thank you, Denise! It’s amazing what a simple addition can do for a piece. I just give the baskets a good vacuum with the brush attachment on my shop vac. Have a great weekend! XOXO
Christina says
Super cute basket makeovers Christy!! Your talent made them smile again. 🙂 I think the first basket with that beachy color is my favorite. 🙂
Have a great rest of your week and weekend. I can’t wait to see the next makeover.
Christy says
Aww thank you, Christina! That blue is such a great color! Enjoy your weekend too and I’ll see ya Tuesday! XOXO
Julie says
Christy: love the gray basket! What I really want to know is where did you get that awesome round wall clock in these pics? Was it a makeover clock? I keep seeing it in many of you posts and I really need it or be able to makeover a similar clock that I have. I’m ready to paint over the old dark brown oil-rubbed bronze, yuck! Thank you!!
Christy says
Thank you, Julie! I found that clock at Hobby Lobby a couple of years ago. I believe they still have it, and the clocks are half off every other week if you have one nearby! XOXO
Janice Holt says
It’s hard to choose which one I like best because they are all so pretty. Think it might be the second one and love the embellishments on them.
Christy says
Thank you, Janice! That one seems to be a favorite! It’s amazing what a little added bling can do! XOXO
Susan Stevenson says
I love basket makeovers! Every one of them is gorgeous! Pinned 🙂
Christy says
Thank you so much, Susan!! Have a wonderful weekend! XOXO

Christy says

Sandra says
Really loved the striped handles…I will definitely try that.
Christy says
Thank you, Sandra! XOXO
Michele M. says
Super awesome re-dos on these 4 baskets, Christy! My very fav is your custom made blue one. Love how you styled them all, too.
Christy says
Thank you, Michele! I love the styling part! XOXO
Margie says
Love love baskets & your make overs are like a little gift. The tags you added are so sweet.I need to get busy with mine thanks for the inspiration.
Christy says
Oh I love that, Margie! Thank you! Wouldn’t these be sweet to give as a gift with treats or some favorite things inside? Happy creating! XOXO
deanna says
So many “rescue” baskets out there. You do wonderful things to bring them back to life. I think the one you did with the smokey gel stain is my favorite. Love the striped handles and the tag/key addition. Those little extras really make the pieces special. Those were some interesting little doodads on the before picture:)
Christy says
Thank you, Deanna! That one seems to be a favorite! I need to be on the lookout for a few fun things to add to my next set of baskets. And ha ha! What were those doodads suppose to be anyway?? XOXO
Marcie Lovett says
I love baskets and reluctantly purged all but a very few from my large collection. It takes all my willpower to not pick up every cute one at the thrift store. And these are some cute ones! Although I would have walked right past the funky apples. Not sure I’d even take that one for free 😂 But you saw beyond the extraneous “decoration” and made it lovely. I always get a laugh out of your repurposing, Christy! Reuse a metal backplate? Why not, when it’s got such a great shape!
Christy says
I’m with you on the baskets! I cannot walk past them. I would never have bought that basket with the “apples”, but I’ll take it for free lol…I’m so glad it turned out to be a cutie! And that metal piece worked out great! Have a great weekend!! XOXO
Sue Mellette says
I love the four baskets! You gave each one it its on special personality! The blue, the white wash, the gray stain and of course the tags and keys! Thanks for sharing. I always enjoy seeing how creative you are with backet makeovers. I hope you have a wonderful weekend.
Christy says
Thank you so much, Sue! I’m so glad you enjoyed them! Enjoy your weekend also, my friend! XOXO

Christy says
Aww you just made my day, Janet, thank you!! I truly appreciate your kind words, and I’m so happy that you are having success with your projects! Happy creating!! XOXO
Sharon L Austin says
They all turned out great but I can’t wait to see what you do with the dresser. I use a french provincial dresser (like the one in the lower rh corner photo) beneath my tv in the living room and I’ve been wanting to redo it. I just haven’t found any inspiration yet. Fingers crossed!!
Christy says
Thank you, Sharon! I’m saving the longer dresser for Furniture Fixer Upper Day, and I have an idea in mind, so we’ll see if I stick with it or not! XOXO
Gloria says
Loved all your baskets. Sometimes, just the simplest decoration makes it perfect. Infact, I love all your makeovers. You are so creative and extremely good at what you do. Thanks, Christy.
Christy says
Aww I appreciate that so much, Gloria! Thank you!! XOXO
Jackie C says
Who else but you would’ve thought to save the back of an old mirror. You’re brilliant sister! Those tags are the star of the show! Amazing what a little thing like that can do for a piece. they’re all beautiful. Now you’ve got me thinking about gathering up the baskets around here. Your posts always motivate me ❤️
Christy says
Aww thank you, Jackie! Ha ha…you know I can’t throw away perfectly good wood! And yay!! Happy creating!! XOXO
Cheryl says
I recently purchased DB Silk paint in Wharf from you. I thought it was more gray but now that I got it, it looks more green. I planned to mix it with an off-white silk paint I already have to just give that a bit of color but do you have thoughts on how I can make it look more gray and less green? Add a few drops of black? Does it also have to be silk paint to mix it?
Christy says
Hi Cheryl! You probably already have, but just in case, have you tested it on something yet? Paint often looks a different color when it dries. It’s not recommended to mix the Silk Mineral paint and chalk paint, but I wonder if you applied a black wax or glaze over the top?
Constance Colvin says
Well, awesome Christy. More inspiration here!
Christy says
Thank you, my friend! XOXO
Cecilia from Georgia says
All 4 are great but I love the last one best. The embellishments you add are so clever and really add to the look for a low price. I’m looking around my junky room where my stash lives and see 5 baskets (not to mention more that may be buried under other stuff), and you have inspired me to undertake a basket marathon! Thanks for all your super ideas!
Christy says
Thank you, Cecilia! The little additions really do add so much! And lining them all up and knocking them out is the way to go! Have fun! XOXO
Kimberly Wollmer says
I have some of those back plates. Just the other day I thought about throwing them out. They look amazing painted and hanging on the baskets. Before throwing anything out in the future, I will ask myself, “What would Christy do?” lol! Great job once again! Have a great weekend.
Christy says
Oh yay!! Yes, they worked great here…I wish I had more! I used one here too many years ago that might give you another idea for one: https://www.confessionsofaserialdiyer.com/diy-wooden-tote-redo/. And I love that “What would Christy do??” Ha ha! Thank you, Kimberly! XOXO
